Hukanui Band Programme

I have been running the Top Note - Hukanui Band Programme since 2015,  it is a large programme with many opportunities depending on the age of the child.

Preband - Available to year 2, 3 and 4 children this is an introduction to music programme covering fundamental principles of music, exploring the orchestra and our band instruments, performance, singing and lots of other things. This Programme runs for 4 terms, and culminates in our big end of year performance. Children who have completed this course find the test to get into band easy.

Mini-bones - this programme is unique to Top Note. Available to year 3 and 4 only. Learn to play a mini trombone, reading music and performing. This programme makes a direct transition to playing the trombone in band and as such the children will have a huge head start, however the musical skills they learn are transferable to any instrument so they can choose from the full range of band instruments in year 4 and still have a good head start.

Introduction to drumming - NEW PROGRAMME for 2020, this is an introduction to rhythm, pulse and drumming for year 3 and 4, these kids are not part of band, but are laying a great foundation which will set them up well for any band instrument. Likely to be Fridays before school or lunchtime. Subject to numbers.

Band - at the end year 3 children take an aptitude test and accordingly may be invited to join the band the next year, this involves having group lessons on a flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, marimba or drums during school time, and also having a band or drumline ensemble once a week during school. Children in year 5 and 6 also take the aptitude test for the parents information and are all invited to join the band programme, children with lower scores will be required to have individual lessons.

Advanced musicianship - formal theory lessons for band members, this leads to the opportunity to sit an external exam.

Home practice is required for all of these programmes for children to get the maximum benefit and for parents to get value for money.
