Jody Thomas (prev. Christian)

Jody has been playing the trombone since the age of twelve and quickly got involved with playing in various groups both in and out of school.
In 2003 Jody seized the opportunity to return to studying music, completely her BCCM in 2005; this degree in Contemporary Christian Music featured both trombone performance and song-writing/composition. She then continued her composition studies at Waikato University earning her BMus(Hons)(Comp).
Jody is committed to her own professional development. In 2007 a series of solo performances culminated in Jody achieving a distinction in her Trinity Recital Diploma (ATCL). She has also attended the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Summer school in 2008, 2009 and 2010 as principal trombonist. Since then she has studied for and taken exams in trumpet, saxophone and marimba.
Since 2005 Jody has been developing her teaching career with both private and itinerant teaching; teaching children as young as five and six, up to adults in their...well I probably shouldn't say...!!! Most of her teaching at the moment is in primary and intermediate schools; she conducts school orchestras, brass ensemble and jazz band. She directs the Hukanui School Concert Band taking them to the Waikato Primary Schools competition in each year, co-directs Fairfield Intermediate School band/orchestra, and has recently been appointed Band director of the combined New Plymouth Girls/Boys High School Band.
Jody has a busy performance schedule being the principal euphonium player for Hawera Brass Band, and principal trombonist for Taranaki Symphony Orchestra and formerly principal trombonist in the Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra, and lead trombone in the Hamilton Big Band. Other commitments include pit orchestra for a variety of school production, supply trombonist for Bay of Plenty Symphonia and the NZ Doctors Orchestra, and low brass tutor for the Bay of Plenty music school.
